From 1 November 2021 Company Directors are required to have a Director Identification Number or Director ID.
What is a Director ID
This is a unique identifier, similar to a tax file number, that you will have for life.
If you are a director of a Company it is mandatory for you to apply for a director ID.
The time frame to register for your Director ID is as follows:-
- Current Directors (appointed before 31 October 2021) – have until 30 November 2022 to apply for their Director ID.
- New Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 31 March 2022 – have 28 days from the date of incorporation of their company to register for a Director ID
- From 1 April 2022 – Must have a Director ID before registering a company
How to Apply for a Director ID
There are 3 ways to apply for your Director ID.
- Via the MyGovID App – This is the preferred method
- By telephoning the Australian Business Registry Service on 13 62 50
- In paper form, by the attached Application for a Director Identification Form.
In all cases you will need your Tax File Number, residential address details and identity documents (one primary and two secondary).
If you elect to apply in paper form then a certified copy of one primary and two secondary identification documents is required from the list below:-
Primary documents (1 Document Required)
- Australian full birth certificate (extracts and commemorative certificates are not acceptable)
- Australian passport (including passports that have expired in the past two years)
- Australian citizenship certificate or extract from a Register of Citizenship by Descent
- Foreign passport
Secondary documents (2 Documents Required)
- Medicare card
- Australian driver’s licence or Australian learner’s permit. This must show your photo and signature, and the address on the card must match the details on your application.
Your documents must be certified by one of the following:-
- Barrister
- Solicitor
- Medical practitioner
- Judge
- Justice of the Peace (JP)
- Minister of religion (who is authorised to celebrate marriage)
- Police officer
- Bank, building society or credit union officer with at least five years of service
- Sheriff’s officer
We note that as your accountant we are unable to certify your identification documents as this is perceived to be a conflict of interest by ASIC.
